12 Bible Verses I Love

The Bible is loaded with stuff that teaches us about God and how we are supposed to respond to him. There are so many verses, stories, passages, even entire books that are meet-you-where-you’re-living kind of experiences. Below, in no particular order, are a few of my favorites this week.

What are yours?

  1. Exodus 14:14. You only need to remain calm; the Lord will fight for you. This gives me peace, hope, confidence.
  2. John 9:1-3. As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.” Sometimes the “bad” things in life are just a chance to see how good God is.
  3. John 15:16. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last. Then the father will give you whatever you ask in my name. God has a plan: my success for His success.
  4. Romans 8:26-28. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Sometimes words fail me, but God understands anyway. And he’s got a much bigger perspective than I can see right now.
  5. Luke 2:14. “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will to men.” It’s like a cycle: we give glory to God and he takes care of us.
  6. Psalm 46:10. "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." A good reminder of who’s who here.
  7. Romans 10:13. "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." It’s just that basic. Praise God.
  8. Job 1:21. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.” Hold on loosely to the gifts God gives. And remember this giving & taking away is true for trials too.
  9. Exodus 33:18. Moses said, “Please. Let me see your Glory." Do I want to see God at work badly enough to ask for it? I really should.
  10. Mark 9:24. Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” I want to believe all the way, not just part way.
  11. Jeremiah 29:12-13. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. The often-overlooked follow-up to the popular verse 11. The hope and the future God promises us (v. 11) means we need to be seeking God completely.
  12. Luke 17:15. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. Ten men were healed. Only one said thank you. Jesus noticed. We really need to remember to thank God for all he does for us.
